The winners of the first Islamic Business & Finance Southeast Asia Awards were announced at a gala dinner held at the InterContinental Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Wednesday, 29 November 2017, attended by over 100 Islamic bankers and financiers from around the region. A total of nearly 7,000 votes were cast across 26 voted-for categories in an online poll held on www.cpifinancial.net.
In addition, an expert panel named Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Dr. Teh Hong Piow, Chairman, Public Bank Group winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award Malaysia. Hong Piow began his banking career 67 years ago in 1950. He established Public Bank in 1966, finding great success in the last 50 years. He is due to relinquish the position of Chairman in 2019, capping off an illustrious career.
The top Award, for Best Islamic Bank, went to KFH Malaysia, a voted-upon category decided by voters in Southeast Asia’s Islamic financial community. KFH Malaysia scored a hat trick, with voters choosing KFH Malaysia for three Awards in total. Voters named KFH Malaysia’s Libshara Account-i as Best Islamic Retail Banking Product, as well as voting International Commodity Murabahah Deposit-i Most Innovative Islamic Banking Product.
The Islamic Business & Finance Awards programme, supported by the Dubai International Financial Centre, honoring winners from across the industry, encourage and reward the exceptional performance and growth of the international Islamic business and finance community.
“Islamic Business & Finance has been recognising excellence in the global Islamic economy for over a decade. Our Awards are a barometer of how the industry views itself. It was our great honor to bring our esteemed ceremony to Southeast Asia for the first time. These winning institutions have navigated a tricky economy climate through continued innovation, and found laudable success. As our programme is based on industry voting, these Awards are a reflection of how the Malaysian Islamic finance community views its peers, and the winners named represent the very best in Islamic finance. Each institution should feel proud of what they have accomplished. We look forward to returning to Southeast Asia to see what these exemplary institutions can do in 2018,” said Tony Long, Chief Executive Officer of CPI Financial, publisher of Islamic Business & Finance magazine.
